Our Approach: Bring Surplus Food to Hungry People
Every year in Washington, millions of pounds of useable food ends up in landfills. In fact, an estimated 25% of all food produced in the U.S. fails to find a market and ultimately goes to waste. Yet at the same time, there are 35.1 million Americans that are hungry or at risk of going hungry.
Recognizing these challenges, Food Lifeline provides several
innovative solutions that give food companies a convenient, reliable and safe way to channel surplus food to hungry people. Food producers and retailers give us unmarketable yet wholesome food that would otherwise end up in crowded landfills. Food Lifeline then distributes this food through a
network of more than 300 member food banks, shelters, and meal programs throughout Western Washington.
