The Seattle Foundation Grants Food Lifeline $75,000

Funds allow Food Lifeline to Increase Available Food to Local Hungry People

Seattle, WA, Jul. 29, 2008 - As the cost of food and fuel reaches record highs, a grant from The Seattle Foundation could not have come at a better time for Food Lifeline, Washington's largest hunger relief agency. Food Lifeline received a grant for $75,000 to support efforts to expand its ability to feed the more than half million hungry people it serves yearly.

One-out-of-five children in our state is hungry or at risk of hunger, and the 22 million pounds of food currently distributed by Food Lifeline is not enough to meet the needs of hungry children and their families.

Food Lifeline President and CEO, Linda Nageotte, says food donation levels are not keeping pace with the increasing number of people who need help getting enough to eat. We are struggling to fully meet the need in our communities. Grants like this help give us the ability to expand the amount of food we distribute to diminish hunger and continue to feed hope.

The impact of this grant will be felt by the more than 300 agencies across Western Washington relying on Food Lifeline to help them feed the rising numbers of hungry people who are struggling due to living expenses escalating, the home mortgage crises, higher utility costs, run-away gas prices and steep health costs. This grant allows Food Lifeline to continue its services and lessen the overbearing burdens for hungry individuals, and it establishes the healthier communities The Seattle Foundation strives to create.

The Seattle Foundation, one of the nation's largest and most successful community foundations, paid the grant through gifts from the McKibben/Merner Family Foundation and an anonymous fund.

Food Lifeline's overarching goal is to end hunger in Western Washington. This grant allows Food Lifeline to continue striving to reach that goal. The Seattle Foundation is helping to ensure that 300 food banks, hot meal programs and shelters are readily equipped to help improve the lives of more than 560,000 hungry children and families.
