On January 29, over 150 people from across the state gathered in Olympia for Hunger Action Day, the Anti-Hunger and Nutrition Coalition’s annual lobby day. The day was a tremendous success. Advocates from 32 of the 49 districts met with their lawmakers to urge them to protect funding for hunger relief programs and prioritize nutrition when difficult decisions are being made. Thank you to all those who participated, either in Olympia or by writing or calling your lawmakers!

Decisions are being made every day in Olympia during this rapid 60 day session!
Currently, the legislature is considering the proposed transfer of the Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) from the Department of Commerce to the Department of Agriculture. Moving EFAP to the Department of Agriculture would provide many potential benefits, including an enhanced relationship between farms and food banks and meal programs and an improved relationship between Washington’s food programs and USDA food programs.
The two bills proposing this move, HB 2863 and SB 6341, have passed through committee, the Senate voted YES, and are now subject to a general vote in the House. Now is the time to tell your Representative that you support the move of EFAP to the Department of Agriculture.
Call the Legislative Hotline at: 1-800-562-6000
Urge your Representative to “pass HB 2863 and SB 6341.”
A one minute call will make a huge difference. Let your voice be heard!
This session, Food Lifeline is urging the legislature to take a balanced approach to addressing the economic recession by including new revenue options. By creating new revenue and implementing efficiencies, we can continue to support vital programs when they are needed most.
As a part of the Rebuilding Our Economic Future Coalition, Food Lifeline urges you to show your support for new revenue at the “Rally to Protect Our Future” on Monday, February 15th in Olympia. Go here to find out more about the Rally on the capitol steps or to sign up.
